ADLE3800PC: PCIe/104 Ensures Greater Road Safety
July 22, 2015 – ADL Embedded Solutions, a leading provider of customizable, high-performance embedded solutions for demanding thermal and rugged environments is announcing the design-in success of the “Ramet” project (use of PCIe/104 in harsh environments). Ramet, a leading provider of active and passive traffic radar systems, opts for ADL Embedded Solutions’ PCIe/104 single board computer ADLE3800PC-E3845 for the control and evaluation of its new speed monitoring systems of the RAMER 10 family.
The Ramer 10 family consists of compact modular radar cameras featuring Doppler radar with 34.0, 34.3 or 24.125GHz. The previous version is based on AD9 radar cameras that are now being advanced and equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Q-Products, the long-standing Czech and Slovak Republic distribution and development partner of ADL Embedded Solutions is supporting and accompanying Ramet in the successful migration from the old to the new industrial PC. Important mandatory criteria in this project were the compact design of the system, a single board solution, long-term availability and the ability to use it in an extended temperature range. Additional customer requests for greater computing power and memory capacity are met in full and successfully integrated with the new ADL CPU board solution.
The new generation of radar cameras now features a lighter measuring unit, a new, more powerful single board computer and the option of remote control coupled with the remote transmission of images.
The radar cameras are available in a variety of versions – mobile mounted in a vehicle, stationary on a tripod or as a fixed installation on a gantry or bridge, etc. All these versions are based on the same philosophy and technical solution. The speeding offences are documented and can be seen on the display immediately after the measurement. In addition, the radar cameras are equipped with ANPR modules. These are capable of recognizing vehicle number plates and crosschecking these against a corresponding database that can be integrated into each radar camera. If this is not required, the ANPR module can be used for back office processing. The radar camera can perform measurements in both directions and take pictures of the front and rear of vehicles. The integrated GPS system also allows the precise location of the measurement to be identified.
“The advantages afforded to us by the single board computer (SBC) from ADL Embedded Solutions are the extremely robust and compact design, the long-term availability of over seven years, the high quality and reliability – the ADLE3800PC-3845 withstands harsh, non-air-conditioned environments – and the excellent support on site by Q-Products”, comments Rudolf Vácha, Managing Director of Ramet. “The greatest advantage however is the outstanding low power/price/performance ratio. Thanks to the successful migration onto this new SBC, we can process and evaluate more data in less time.”
High Processing Power and Energy Efficiency for Harsh Environments
The PCIe/104 computer ADLE3800PC-3845 used from ADL Embedded Systems is based on Intel’s system-on-chip (SoC) E3845 Atom processor, with clocks speeds of up to 1.91GHz. Up to 8GB DDR3L-1333 DRAM are available for the main memory. The graphics engine of the ADLE3800PC is capable of decoding ten or more streams of 1080p videos and features integrated hardware acceleration for the video decoding of H.264, MVC, VPG8, VC1/WMV9 and other standards. It also supports DirectX 11, Open GL 4.0, full HD video playback and a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1600 at 60Hz with dual display support.
In terms of interfaces, the SBC supports eight USB 2.0, one USB 3.0, two RS232 COM and two 10/100/1000 Mbit Ethernet LAN ports plus a 7.1 channel HD audio interface with SPDIF inputs/outputs. Further features include two SATA 3 GB/s channels in addition to video ports for DVI/VGA and DisplayPort/HDMI. The expansion options include an mSATA socket and a PCIe/104 connection with two 2nd generation PCIe x1 lanes. The SBC is supplied with just 5V DC and operates with a thermal solution developed by ADL Embedded Solutions or an approved thermal solution in the temperature range from –40°C to +85°C.
